چکیده

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Evaluation of contamination of anesthesia circuits by collecting 56 culture samples from the circular system; previously reprocessed tracheas by disinfection with 1% hypochlorite or 2% glutaraldehyde after being washed in non-sterile water and soap and dried by using compressed air and stored in surgical grade paper; and from other places of the non-reprocessed respiratory circuit, before anesthetic procedures. METHODS Samples from the inspiratory and expiratory branches of the tracheas, canister, soda-lime, and collector jar (drain) through swab in Stuart medium and streaked in Agar blood, Mac Conkey, and Sabouraud growth media. RESULTS The level of contamination with fungus and bacteria in the inspiratory and expiratory branches of tracheas reached up to 39.3% in some sites; in some cases, more than one microorganism was present, 75% fungal and 25% bacterial contamination. Cultures were positive for Candida sp., Dermatophytus sp., Penicillium sp., Aspergillus sp., Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus saprophyticus, and Staphylococcus epidermidis. Contamination was observed in 25% of the canisters with growth of Candida sp., Penicillium sp., Dermatophytus sp., Aspergillus sp., and Fusarium sp. In the collector jar, a contamination rate of 36% was observed with growth of Candida sp., Dermatophytus sp., S. saprophyticus and Acinetobacter baumannii. Microorganisms did not grow in soda-lime cultures. CONCLUSIONS In all sites investigated except for soda-lime growth of microorganisms was observed with the possibility of cross infection.

Sterilization versus disinfection of anesthesia breathing circuits: safety and economic considerations.

Previous studies In 1977, du Moulin and Saubermann compared the bacterial contamination of the anesthesia machine to two groups of patients: one group had upper respiratory tracts colonized with gram negative bacilli and another group had normal upper respiratory tract flora. 4 They found no significant difference between the organisms cultured from the inspiratory and expiratory tubing used by...

Hand contamination of anesthesia providers is an important risk factor for intraoperative bacterial transmission.

BACKGROUND We have recently shown that intraoperative bacterial transmission to patient IV stopcock sets is associated with increased patient mortality. In this study, we hypothesized that bacterial contamination of anesthesia provider hands before patient contact is a risk factor for direct intraoperative bacterial transmission. METHODS Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center is a tertiary care a...

An in vivo evaluation of the mycobacterial filtration efficacy of three breathing filters used in anesthesia.

BACKGROUND The use of breathing filters (BFs) has been recommended to protect the anesthesia apparatus in proven or suspected cases of tuberculosis. Some investigators have also suggested the use of BF to alleviate the need to change anesthesia breathing circuits after each case. This study evaluated the filtration efficacy of three different BFs to prevent mycobacterial contamination of breath...

have been used for more than 30 years for heat and moisture retention during general anesthesia. Studies about bacteriostatic vs nonbacteriostatic HMEs (BHMEs/ NHMEs) have been conducted to assess their role in preventing bacterial transmission to the anesthesia breathing circuit; none have been done on anesthetized patients in the operating room. The present study adds to existing knowledge ab...

Microbiological Contamination of Cosmetic Creams in Tehran

Abstract Background and Objective: Transmission of pathogens by cosmetics is one of the major health complications. Direct contact with contaminated non-standard cosmetics can have irreparable side effects for the consumers. Thus, the evaluation of microbial contamination in cosmetic products is important. The aim of this study was to assess the microbiological contamination of one of freque...
